Everyone’s favourite streaming service was rocked last weekend when one of its flagship TV shows – Orange is the new Black – had its entire fifth season leaked on the web following Netflix’s refusal to negotiate with a hacker.
The hacker stole the episodes from a post-production studio along with episodes from dozens of other TV shows from many major networks. The hacker is still trying to extort money from the networks which distribute the programs.
ICM Partners, one of Hollywood’s largest talent agencies, were also hacked recently. The hackers got employee social security numbers before the situation was shut down by the FBI. The American entertainment trade magazine Variety also had a security breach recently. Thousands of attempts, on a weekly basis, are said to be made against Hollywood companies.
This isn’t a new trend in Hollywood either, it’s been going on for years. You may remember the Sony Pictures hack of 2014. A hacker group calling themselves Guardians of Peace (GOP) who leaked a series of confidential data from the film studio. This included personal information about employees, their families, not to mention copies of then-unreleased Sony films.
Fighting against the hacks
Hollywood has had its fair share of hacking issues plague it in recent times. At this point in the Hollywood narrative is usually when the Rocky style comeback happens. So, is there a way to fight against the hackers?
Studios, agencies, development houses, actors and studio heads all need to be aware that the best cyber security is only as strong as its weakest link. There are so many third parties involved in the making of a TV show or film. Post production, audio, editing houses and more all hold valuable Hollywood assets that they need to keep secure.
All businesses are susceptible to hacking, but Hollywood related businesses are the ones that hit the news for more obvious reasons. But just like any other business dealing with sensitive or important information there must be training set up to educate on how hacking occurs and how to prevent an attack before it’s too late. A simple awareness training program can go a long way toward preventing a massive leak and costing a Hollywood studio tens of millions of pounds.
