February 1st is a day that is completely devoted to changing passwords, and creating new secure passwords, to keep online data safe.
In 2012, Matt Buchanan came up with the very creative idea to name February 1st as International change your password day. After shopping online, Matt was informed that his details may have been stolen and that the attackers would now have access to his password.
Matt realised to his horror that the password that he had used for this online account was in fact a password that he used for almost all of his online accounts. That day Matt had to change his password on almost all of his accounts. This time Matt ensured that all his passwords were difficult, hard to crack and unique to each account.
Matt's eureka moment came when he realised that he would have to constantly change his password.
“And, boy, I've got a lot of accounts, I realized as I was counting up all the password changes I needed to make. And then, a nanosecond later came the realization that this is going to keep happening, every year, every month, maybe every week. “ Matt Buchanan
Matt decided that he would help everyone around the world by giving us one specific date that would remind us the importance of changing our password “International Change your Password day”.
Did you know that the majority of cases of stolen information occur from a hacker basically guessing a victim’s password?
On this day the “peer pressure” internationally should help give you the motivation to change your password on all of your accounts you have a responsibility to ensure that your password is secure and only known to you.
