Scam of the Week – NatWest Customers Targeted with Phishing Emails

Worried NatWest customers are being targeted by a new round of phishing emails designed to steal their personal data.

The email is branded with the official NatWest Logo and claims the bank will be introducing new online banking authentication procedures to protect the information of its online users.

Customers are directed to click on a link to access their online banking accounts, but are in fact directed through to a fake NatWest website set up specifically to steal their personal information.

Phishing websites are created to trick unsuspecting users into thinking they are on a legitimate site and will often contain the same official looking branding, logos and language that appear on the genuine company website.

The fraudsters will collect all the personal and financial information that customers fill out and then use this data to commit identity theft, or clear out their bank accounts.

NatWest provided advice to their customers on what they should do if they get targeted by a phishing scam: “We will never ask our customers for any personal information by email. You should not respond to any email asking you to divulge personal information.

“It’s also important that you don’t click on any of the links or attachments it contains. NatWest will never ask you for your full Online Banking PIN, full Online Banking password, activation codes or card reader codes. If you think you have been targeted with a phishing email, let us know. Please forward the email to us at phishing@natwest.com.”

It’s not the first time NatWest customers have been targeted by phishing scams – In January this year, customers were hit with a sophisticated phishing text message that appeared in the same chain of messages as previous, genuine messages from NatWest.

Fraudsters tend to use the same tried and tested methods to trick customers into divulging their personal details so it’s always important to pay close attention to any emails or texts that come out of the blue or appear suspicious.

Phishing emails often include a number of red flags that include; poor grammar, a mismatched URL, threatening or urgent language, claims of prizes or a request for information.
